What’s an Autonomous Robot?
From the word Autonomous itself we mean having the freedom to govern itself or control its own affairs. Autonomous Robots certainly are those which can act independently without the interference of an user. These robots are always considered a breakthrough for the automation in the field of robotics. Most importantly these robots take their own decisions which make them different from the user oriented ones. Autonomous robotics projects will help you brush up your knowledge on the self driven projects.

Line follower robots :
Basically as the name suggests line follower robot is an automated guided vehicle follow a visual line embedded on the floor or ceiling. Usually, the visual line is the path in which the line follower robot goes . Certainly, it will be a black line on a white surface but the other way. Certain advanced Line Follower Robots use invisible magnetic field as their paths. These robots help in the transportation of objects inside the industries and go downs.
Line follower Robot is one of the first robots that beginners and students would get their first robotic experience with. In this project, we have designed a simple Line Follower Robot using Arduino and some other components.
- Arduino UNO (or Arduino Nano).
- L293D Motor Driver IC.
- Geared Motors x 2.
- Robot Chassis.
- IR Sensor Module x 2.
- Black Tape (Electrical Insulation Tape).
- Connecting Wires.
- Power supply.
In this project, basically we will design an Arduino based Line Follower Robot. The working of the project is pretty simple: Detect the black line on the surface and move along that line.
Most importantly we need sensors to detect the line for line detection logic. We will use two IR Sensors, which consists of IR LED and Photo diode. They are placed in a reflective way i.e. side – by – side. Certainly,whenever they will come in to proximity of a reflective surface, the photo diode will detect the light emitted by IR sensor.
The following image shows the working of a typical IR Sensor (IR LED – Photo diode pair) in front of a light coloured surface and a black surface. We know that the reflectance of the light coloured surface is high. So the infrared light emitted by IR LED will be maximum and will be detected by the Photo diode.
Chocorobo: the chocolate delivery boy :
This robot will serve you chocolates with a single gesture of yours. So nice !! for a lazy lads laying on the bed all day. Simple and easy to build face following robot with off-the-shelf parts for anyone to create. No need for expensive or specialised tools such as 3D printers, CNC machines, or laser cutters. Most of the items you can easily order from Adafruit or Amazon and probably already have laying around.
The robot is basically a line following robot but instead of following a line. The robot will track to the faces it sees. Attach a container, box, basket, etc. to hold things. The robot then can be used to delivery bot. ChocoRobo likes to deliver chocolates to kids and make friends.
Lane Detector :
In any driving scenario, lane lines are an essential component of indicating traffic flow and where a vehicle should drive. It’s also a good starting point when developing a self-driving car! In this project, I’ll be showing how to build your own lane detection system in Open CV using Python. Here’s the structure of our lane detection pipeline:
- Reading Images.
- Colour Filtering in HLS.
- Region of Interest.
- Canny Edge Detection.
- Rough Line Detection.
- Line Filtering & Averaging.
- Overlay detected lane.
- Applying to Video.
Autonomous Quad copters:
Quad-copters have been the most popular flying machine so far. Most of the people buy commercially available Ready to Fly quad-copters to train their selves to fly. As the next step they try to build their own quad-copter using frames, motors, flight controllers etc. Further, there are many tutorials, books on building your own quad-copter. Therefore, most of the electronic hobbyists know how to build a quad-copter by assembling the necessary components.
“CrazyFlie” is an opensource quad copter development platform. Certainly, this is one of the best platforms so far. With this, you can start building your own autonomous flying machines in your own way. Following video shows the capability of the CrazyFlie to hover at one place.

Most importantly, the autonomous robotics projects are much diverse and this automation field is same as the ocean. Hence, it depends upon oneself how much are they interested and how much deeper they can go into the field .
