India is the country in which more than half of the students take engineering without their interest. Most of them take it because their parents ask them too . This article would be useful for students to atleast choose the branch that can stifle little bit interest in them. I am myself an ECE engineer I will walk you down the entire semesters. If you like the subjects and the framework of the branch you can go for it. So let’s deep dive into the field of Electronics and Communication engineering.
The first semester you would be mostly studying the basic courses like engineering math , chemistry , physics . Mostly , it will be twelfth standard basics. The core subject in this semester is Network theory . It is basically a subject in which current equations are solved. This subject starts from the basic of twelfth standard physics. Therefore , it will be pretty easy to cope in this semester .
The second semester becomes a little bit difficult. The core subjects that comes in are Semiconductors and Network theory. Semiconductors is very interesting subject. It starts with the p-n junction diodes and ends with the devices used in industries. It will mostly cover the basic groundwork of the branch . Therefore, it is very important to pay attention in this class. Network theory is same as last semester .However , the only difference is the dealing with AC currents and frequency response.
The third semester brings in most of the core subjects. The subjects are Analog Electronic circuits , Digital Logic Design and Electromagnetic Theory,Signal and Systems. Sounds heavy ! trust me they are . The semester really gets tough with all the core subjects as a result the grades may shake.
- Analog Electronics: It a one step forward to the semiconductors. In semiconductors you studied devices , whereas here you would use them. The devices would be used to make components . It will have a project . Henceforth , it is very important to learn the subject properly.
- Digital: The world changes here. Till now you were working with the current equations , solving them to find current values. Here , the world turns to zeros and ones . You would work with 0 and 1 , which is quite intriguing . Therefore , it comes with the lab and project.
- EMFT: The subject is same as the magnetism from physics in twelfth . However , the change is that it is no more theory now . It is full of numericals and no theory . Almost , all the students who have shaky physics find it difficult to solve.
- Signals and System: The subject contains the analysis of the signals. The subject is helpful in DSP .
The fourth semester gets interesting because of communication subjects . Moreover , the microcontroller gives the riveting touch to the subject. The subjects are Analog communications, Microcontroller . Analog Communications is the communication through the analog signals . You will study various types of modulation schemes. In this subject the focus will basically on how to transmit signals without distorting them. Microcontroller 8051 is in the syllabus . It is the basic of all the microcontroller. Therefore , I recommend that you put your heart in this subject.
The fifth semester is one more step in communications. The subjects offered are VLSI , Digital Communication and Digital Signal Processing. First of all , VLSI stands for very large scale integration. The subject teaches you how all the semiconductor devices are made. The devices that are used in computers and mobile phones. Above all , VLSI is asked during interviews in placements. Digital Signal is a step more in signal processing, It is full of filters and how to make them . Digital communication is sending signal 0 and 1.
At this point almost all your core subjects are complete . You will also be taking electives. Take the subjects aligning to your interest. For example, if you like microcontroller , you can take Advanced microcontroller . It will give you in depth knowledge of the subject . More electives that the university offers are LIC, which you should take if you like semiconductors in previous semester.
If you have little interest in computers , you should take subjects like computer networks , Operating systems etc. University offers them and all the companies during placements expect you to know them . My advice here would be to take them. Moreover , it will give you an edge over all other students . Data Structures is also one of the subject which is important . it comes in handy when you are coding during projects.
This is basically the framework of subjects and how your four years are going to be if you take ECE. The last year is going to be little bit hectic because of the placements. I won’t lie to you , it is not easy for ECE students. Since , there are very less companies who prefer ECE. Even if they want , they would expect you to code, because that’s how the industry is changing. It is moving toward automation and data collection . Even so , the people who are determined , get through in core company . The package mostly is around 4-5 lpa. My suggestion to anyone who loves the core should go for higher studies. It will open more prospectus to you .
