An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, often with real-time computing constraints. It is embedded as part of a complete device often including hardware and mechanical parts. Embedded systems control many devices in common use today. Ninety-eight percent of all microprocessors are manufactured as components of embedded systems.
A number of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things – IoT, Mechatronics (Industrial Robotics), Virtual & Augmented Reality etc are based on Embedded Systems. With such kind of contributions to the latest technologies, there is no doubt that embedded systems is going to emerge as a big player in the market in coming years.
Being an engineering student, you need to understand the embedded systems from core to stay updated with the latest technologies and this will be possible only when you start learning the concepts by building good embedded projects.
Embedded is a vast branch there are project related to several fields so you need to choose the field you want to work on, few examples are given below:
- Smart Energy
There are several platforms from which you can start building your projects, few examples are given below:
- Arduino UNO development board
- Raspberry Pi
- AVR microcontroller
- PIC microcontroller
If you are new to this you should start with Arduino UNO. Arduino UNO is an open source microcontroller based board (ATmega328/p). The programming of this board is done on Arduino IDE which is easy to learn and the programming language is C/C++.
Projects (Ideas) You can do with Embedded
IoT Internet of Things is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure.
A. Automated street lighting system:
Level 1: Creating a smart lightning system which turns on when there is no light and turns off when there is no light.
Level 2: Creating more smart light which turns on at night only when if someone is going to pass under it other wise they will stay off.
B. Smart Irrigation system:
Creating smart system which analyse the data of water in soil and waters the plants according to their need.
C. Weather monitoring system:
Creating a device which takes and analyse data of temperature and humidity from the air and notify us with the type of weather expected.
Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and others. Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing.
A. BT( Bluetooth) Car:
Creating a bar/bot which can be controlled by BT from a app in your mobile.
B. Wi-Fi Car:
Creating a bar/bot which can be controlled by WIFI from a app in your mobile.
C. RF Car (RC) :
Creating a bar/bot which can be controlled by RC controller.
D. Swarm Robots:
Creating robots which follow the commands or movements of the master robot.
E. Gesture controlled robot:
Creating a robot that can be controlled using your hand gestures through ADXL accelerometer sensor.
Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of science that includes a combination of mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, telecommunications engineering, systems engineering and control engineering. As technology advances, the subfields of engineering multiply and adapt. Mechatronics’ aim is a design process that unifies these subfields. Originally, mechatronics just included the combination of mechanics and electronics, therefore the word is a combination of mechanics and electronics.
A. Animatronics Hand:
Create an electronic device that can mimic the human actions with the help of flex sensors.
B. Robotic Arm:
Create a robotic arm that will have 3 degrees of freedom and can be controlled using an Android App.
C. Solar Tracker:
Create an electronic device that can orient the solar panels autonomously towards the direction where there is maximum sunlight intensity.
D. Walking Robot/Humanoid:
Create a robot that can walk on its own feet use servos to control all the motions.
Automation is the technology by which a process or procedure is performed without human assistance. Automation or automatic control is the use of various control systems for operating equipment such as machinery, processes in factories, boilers and heat treating ovens, switching on telephone networks, steering and stabilization of ships, aircraft and other applications and vehicles with minimal or reduced human intervention. Some processes have been completely automated.
A. Automated railway crossing:
Create an electronic device that can automate the opening/closing of railway gates.
B. Home Automation System:
Create an electronic device that can be used to control all the home appliances using your smart phone via Android / IOS App.
C. CNC machine:
Create a machine which takes an image as an input and draws it on a paper with a pen.
With urbanization on the rise and as its growth rate reaches new peaks, most of the recent announcements from governments all over the world revolve around implementation of smart energy systems. The only way to tackle the energy crisis is to device an efficient energy plan that comprises of smart energy methodologies.
A. Solar mobile charger:
Through this project you will develop an electronic device that can trap the solar energy and use it to charge the battery.
B. Smart traffic lighting system:
Through this project you will develop an electronic device that will control the traffic lights autonomously based on the traffic intensity.
C. Smart Energy Meter using GSM:
Through this project you will develop an electronic device that can read the data about the energy consumed from the energy meter and update the user via SMS.
