What is an embedded system?

An embedded system is a computer system designed for performing one or two specific functions. The embedded system combines the electrical, chemical and mechanical components along with a computer concealed inside it to perform one or two dedicated application functions.
In technical terms, an embedded system is formed by combination of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), Field Programmable Logic Arrays (FPGAs), Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) and Gate Arrays. Unlike General purpose Computers which perform a variety of tasks, these systems are designed to perform only few functions specified to it. These can be thought of software within a hardware.
